Meet the Founder
Angel aka Sky
My Name is Angel, but my friends affectionately call me Sky. I was born and raised in the small town of Napoleonville, Louisiana. I am the only girl, and I have 5 brothers. We were a family of 8 living in a 3-bedroom 1 bathroom trailer. My Parent’s eventually Divorced and sometime later my mom purchased a home. I finished school and attempted to live out of state with my aunt, which was a wonderful experience. I eventually moved back home where I ended up having a biopsy then surgery on a tumor that started out as a small knot on the back of my neck and grew to extend to the 3rd vertebra in my neck and pushed up the base of my skull. I would eventually end up working in dispatch for Louisiana State Police, get married and have my one and only son, Kaiden. I wanted more kids but would be deterred from the idea due to fibroids. In 2016 right before I finished my Medical Assistant Program, I would have surgery to remove my uterus and cervix along with a 4lb fibroid.
From the day he was born I knew I wanted something different for him and my new little family. I went to school for medical assisting. I remember the day I drove to orientation “More Than Anything” by Lamar Campbell was playing, and I felt a peace that surpassed all understanding. I had no Idea how becoming a Medical Assistant would change my life! I was determined to finish and God put on my heart that once I finished, I needed to leave, and that’s what I did. I made sure my certification would transfer from state to state. I secured my first job at a blood bank as a phlebotomist. I researched possible places to relocate and landed on San Antonio. I would later discover I had a cousin who was already here. I started applying to Jobs and took Kaiden on his first airplane ride. We visited my cousin, looked at some apartments, and rode through parts of town. I felt it was a city but still country enough to navigate with no problems. I would eventually get called for an interview with the local San Antonio Blood Bank. I flew in and out same day. I eventually got the job and made the move to San Antonio. Things have not been easy since we have been here, I divorced Kaiden's dad shortly after. Moving to a new city with my core help back
home navigating single parenting and learning to date again was a lot of trial and error. In the process I learned alot about myself and truly saw what I was capable of as a person and a parent. Everything I have been through and accomplished has gotten me to this point SIsters in purpose was developed because I have not had the most stable living situation being a one income household and now trying to go back to school. I moved into an apartment complex that didn’t really want me there.
They did what they had to do to get me out regardless of me being responsible for a child and a cat and being a nursing student with nowhere to go. Thankfully I had friends who helped me get my stuff out before it was thrown on the streets, and we made the best of living in an extended stay. There were so many resources but a lot of red tape. I felt like I was going in circles because everyone kept turning me back to the same places that were already turning me away. I was told that because I was in an extended stay I wasn’t homeless and a lot of places really would not help. I was truly saddened and inspired by the young lady in chicago who was living in her
Van because she experienced the same lack of access to resources. Unfortunately, one of her sweet children ended up losing their life because of the situation and it wasn’t until then that people were sparked to do something. I want to build sisters in purpose with the purpose of helping mothers the first time around and getting them immediate access to the things they need, including mental health resources. Moving to a new state with an 8-year-old going through a divorce and navigating single parenthood was a lot for me and Kaiden. My first thought was to get us both into therapy. Thank You God for Ms. Latara. She has been my Angel for the past 6 or 7 years. She has watched both Kaiden and I grow and adapt. She has seen me through some of my darkest times. She continues to help me navigate, and I still see her weekly. I am always happy to share her with the world because I know she will help and be a blessing to others the same way she has helped and been a blessing to Kaiden and me. To my darling son Kaiden Everything I do and have done up to
this point has been for you. I am so proud of the person you have become and everything you have accomplished. You are truly wise beyond your years. Thank you for loving me unconditionally and giving me the grace I sometimes lacked. Seeing the person you have become is a constant reminder that I did the right thing. I love you Sonshine and I pray you continue to aim for the stars and know that I love you just the way you are. As I continue to navigate nursing school, I will also continue to develop sisters in purpose into a strong network, giving single mothers the care they need without the red tape....Just know that I see you and I am here to help.
